FROM THE VAULT: "DONKEY KONG WINS"

Here's another reposting of an old design from my previous blog -- a tribute to one of my favorite video games ever: DONKEY KONG. Read the original blog post HERE. I hope to get this baby printed as a poster sometime soon.

More BLACK & WHITE prints!

See previous post.

Some BLACK & WHITE prints!

I was recently contacted by a printing company that wanted to try printing some black and white versions of some of my illustrations, so I took a few of them and gave them the black and white treatment. This involved much more than just converting the files to grayscale -- I had to go back into the layers and remove some colors and convert others to halftones to get the desired effect for printing. Hope to see some of these soon.

UPCOMING DIE-CUT STICKERS!

Thought I'd post a bunch of die-cut sticker designs that I'll be rolling out in my BeastWreck Shirts & Stuff Shop over the coming months. A little teaser to whet your appetite and allow you plenty of time to plan out the best strategy for wallpapering your entire house with these things!

BEAST DU JOUR #16: "Stuggrhh"

Back with another Beast du Jour entry!
I wanted to mix things up a bit with this one and get back to a technique I've been meaning to try more of. Sketched and inked on scrap cardboard with white paint highlights. I really like having the tone of the paper act as a shadowy midground once the highlights are painted in. Dove in and finished this without pausing, and managed to finish it at the 60-minute mark. I'll be trying more of this soon.

This handsome fellow is a "Stuggrhh", and it looks like my brain took me in a sort of root-influenced direction with this one. Stuggrhh's have a pretty low mass, though they're hulking brutes, which enable them to climb quickly into the canopy of their forest home and await their prey, which they entangles in their tendril-like fingers and toes, then paralyze with their mouth-stingers so they can begin the slow process of absorption. No one knows how long they live, but it can be measured in the triple digits.

ELECTRIC FRANKENSTEIN design colors

ELECTRIC FRANKENSTEIN mascot colors. I think I like how this color scheme looks. Might leave it be for now. Will be adding the logo soon.

Behold, the BEHOLDER!

Those of you into D&D might be interested in this. I was one of 10 artists recently commissioned by Wizards of the Coast to participate in a little art trial where we were all given the task of reinterpreting Wayne Reynold’s fantastic original Beholder artwork in our own individual styles. The results are diverse and impressive, and I think I did okay in the end despite my style not being in the typical “painted fantasy” vein. Check ‘em out here and see what you think!

I'm (of course) not 100% happy with how my piece turned out. The drawing is solid, I think, but I could have done so much better on the colors. This assignment came right smack in the middle of a very difficult and stressful time in my life, so I did the best I could, and it working with art director Keven Smith was a joy, but would definitely love another crack at something like this.

It is very cool to see the differing interpretations of the piece by these different and very talented artists. The other artists involved were Emily Warren, Andrew Robinson, Joy Ang, Mark A. Nelson, Ben Templesmith, Steven Silver, Bobby Chiu, Richard Anderson and Omar Rayyan. There's something I dig about every one of their pieces, but I absolutely love what Andrew Robinson did with the Beholder's face! Big thanks to Jon Schindehette and Keven Smith for including me in this very enjoyable and exciting opportunity, and hopefully I will be able to do some more work for the fine folks at Wizards of the Coast in the near future.

BOUNTY HUNTER composite inks

Since it's STAR WARS day (or whatever), here's my finished composite inks for my Bounty Hunter design. Inked Fett and his ship (Slave I) separately, then composited them in photoshop. Moving on to colors.
