PREORDER: The order has already been placed with the printer and should arrive and begin shipping around December 16th!

BeastWreck pays homage to that wonderful cultural highlight of its youth, the old-school Classic Arcade. If you're like me, you miss those old arcades with their rows of flickering, pulsating lights and blaring electronic repetitive noise, beckoning you like so many electric bug-zappers to feed rolls of quarters into their greedy mechanical guts as you fondle their joysticks and tap out arcane rhythms on their candy-like buttons with a glazed hypnotic fever!

3-color design soft ink over discharge underbase screenprinted (no thick plastisol inks) on black Hanes 5180 6.1 oz 100% ringspun preshrunk cotton, high stitch-density fabric. 1-color BeastWreck logo printed on back.

CLASSIC ARCADE revised!

Here's an update on my reworking of my CLASSIC ARCADE design. Substituted a gorilla skeleton for the T-Rex. Fits with my branding and the arcade theme.

As I said in the previous post, keeping the T-Rex skeleton in there just didn't seem to be working. I needed something that would more closely tie with the theme, yet still call back to the original iconic image this design is based on. Keeping the skeletal silhouette seemed to be essential, and using a gorilla skeleton should have been obvious to me from the get-go. It's only my chosen mascot animal, and it ties into the "Classic Arcade" theme through the fact that one of the most famous foundational arcade characters was a big ol' gorilla -- I'm talkin' about Donkey Kong! I feel foolish that this did not occur to me immediately!

BEASTWRECK ATTACKS!

Finished the colors for my BEASTWRECK ATTACKS design. It's an homage (aka "rip-off") of the wax-pack art from the original MARS ATTACKS trading card series from the 60's. I've had a soft-spot in my heart for Mars Attacks ever since encountering the original cards when they were reprinted in the 80's, not only for the involvement of ace artist Wally Wood, but for the sheer sci-fi/pulp greasy pop-goodness of the concept and execution. Love it! This design will soon find it's way to various products (namely shirts/stickers/buttons) in my BEASTWRECK SHIRTS & STUFF shop! Stay tuned!

BARREL-CHUCKER colors!

Finally finished coloring my DONKEY KONG tribute design. It took me a while, not only because I had to squeeze this in between several other projects (plus the interruption of the local Freemasons causing trouble again, for which I had to reach out to the local League of Hobos for assistance), but also because I struggled with the colors for a while as a result of what I concluded was a too-busy background. It just wasn't coming together as a solid and powerful image, so I tried simplifying the background shapes and unifying the direction of the movement, as well. I tried scanning in different types of brush strokes and ink splatter techniques and finally settled on a combination of a fairly simple fluid background shape with some scattered ink spray effects that would give the design a bit more punch.

I'm including several different color scheme options out of which I will narrow it down to just one. Which one would you like to see printed on a shirt? Cast your vote!

BARREL-CHUCKER shaded inks!

Completed the second phase of my design inking process, which involves drawing an overlay design incorporating all the hard shading and highlights that I don't want to look like they were done in Photoshop. I print out a copy of the main inks in blueline on bristol board, and work out the shadow and highlight areas, inking them in with brush and pen.

I then scan in the shadow/highlight inks and overlay them onto the regular inks to achieve this final inked image, which can then be colored with relative ease once I work out a color scheme.

BARREL-CHUCKER inks

Had to postpone my continued work on this piece for a while due to some more pressing jobs and commissions, but I'm making progress once again, and I rather like how it's turning out. I'm trying to incorporate more heavy ink lines in my designs to prevent having to do too much noodling around with large areas of color in the final pass.

The subject of this piece is, of course, one of my favorite video games and video game characters of all time, DONKEY KONG. Here, the beast can be seen in his natural habitat, hurling barrels at his least favorite mustachioed Italian plumber.
Colors coming soon.

BeastPop Gorilla Icons!

Everybody knows that gorillas hold a special place in my heart (right below the left ventricle), so when it came time to designate a master mascot for BeastPop ArtWorks, the choice was obvious. I'll be introducing some different beast mascots in the near future, but for now I've got this set of sassy gorillas to kick things off. I initially posted my set of banners that I'm using for this blog, but I just realized I neglected to post decent images of just the mascot icons, so here they are in all their hairy glory (sounds like the name of a hirsuite stripper)!

"Congratulations! It's a Beast!" -- BeastPop Artworks is born!

Welcome to BeastPop ArtWorks! BeastPop is my brand new art and design brand borne from the ashes of PopMonkey Illustration. Why has PopMonkey been put to rest? Well, my personal (and professional) life has been a tumultuous and stressful storm for the past year or so, and I have been feeling the increasing need to just escape from all of that and start over, so to speak. I needed to rethink some things, get my rear in gear and my ducks in a row (or at least attempt to) and seriously refocus my efforts on who I am and where I want my art career to go. The personal stuff is still being worked out (and certainy impacts the professional efforts at times), but it’s time to go whole-hog or get off the dance floor, if I might juggle some metaphors!

I have operated under the Pop-Monkey brand for several years now, and in that time there have been several other “Pop-Monkeys” that have cropped up in the world of art and design -- most recently a major television production group with the same name has been created, so the name felt used and no longer exclusively mine. Even if I hadn’t felt burnt out and in need of a rebirth, there would have been some confusion and legal hassles down the line. In essence, Pop-Monkey needed to die, so that BeastPop could rise from the ashes. Don't worry, it was a nearly painless and quick death.

So, what does BeastPop represent? Well, not much has changed, stylistically. I am continually growing and developing as an artist (thank God), and I seem to be trending away from the overly cartoony/simple aspects of my work that held sway earlier on. The emphasis and influences are still the same: pop art, comic book, animation and pulp-inspired illustration and design. My tools are still very limited given my budget and workspace (near-nonexistent), but I do what I can with what I have, and I hope to make a serious push into the professional field starting... now!

There's a lot of posting to come as I've got some stuff saved up and I'm constantly working on new things, but we'll kick this blog off with some of my banner/ logo designs I cooked up. Enjoy and stick around!
